When you use TotPDF, your PDF stays on your device: the browser does the work and no server receives the file. You do not have to take our word for it. You can check in a minute.
What happens to your file on a typical online tool
Many tools ask you to upload your PDF. The file travels to a server, gets processed there, and then you download the result. In the meantime copies exist in more than one place, and what happens to them depends on each service's policy: how long they are kept, who can access them, and what happens if something goes wrong. That does not mean anyone is doing anything bad. Your document has simply left your hands.
What processing in the browser means
In the browser, the page's code runs on your own device. When you pick a file, it is read into your computer or phone's memory, the program changes it right there, and prepares your download. With no upload, there is no server copy and nothing to delete later. If your documents are contracts, payslips or medical records, that difference matters.
How to check that nothing is uploaded
- Open a TotPDF tool and press F12 (or right-click and choose Inspect) to open the developer tools.
- Go to the Network tab and, if you like, click the clear icon to start fresh.
- Choose a PDF and run the action, for example merge or compress.
- Look at the list: you will see the page and its resources loading, but no request that sends your file. Sort by size to confirm there is no large upload.
- To go further, turn off your internet after the page has loaded and try the tool. It will keep working.
The limits, plainly
Processing in the browser is safer when it comes to uploads, but it is not magic. If your device has malware or you use a browser extension you do not trust, the file is exposed anyway. Use an up-to-date device and extensions you know. Also, the result is a new file on your computer: delete it when you no longer need it.
Keep the original
Always work with copies and check the result before sharing it. Devices have limited memory and a tool may fail with very large documents. If you keep the original, you lose nothing.
