Before you start
- Every page is redrawn as a grey image: text is no longer selectable and links stop working.
- Up to 100 pages at a time.
- When it finishes you see the size before and after.
- If the PDF is already black and white, there is nothing to gain.
What it doesn’t do
- It doesn’t keep selectable text: if you need to copy text or fill in a form, this isn’t the tool.
- It doesn’t clean scans: a yellowed or stained background turns grey, but it doesn’t disappear.
- It doesn’t always shrink the file: a text PDF with a touch of colour can come out bigger.
Common questions
Why does the text stop being selectable?
To guarantee every colour turns grey, each page is redrawn as an image. That is the reliable way to convert any PDF, charts, shapes and photos included. The trade-off: text can’t be selected or copied, and links stop working.
When is it useful
To print without using colour ink, to hand out a uniform black and white document, or to prepare files for a printer that charges colour plates separately.
Is the file uploaded?
No. The PDF is converted on your device. We never receive or store the file or its name. The server only gets the normal requests to load the website.
Does the file get smaller?
It depends. Colourful photos and scans usually shrink a lot; a text PDF with a few colours can grow. You see the size before and after before you download.
What quality is the result?
Pages come out at 200 dpi: readable on screen and on paper. If size matters more than sharpness, run the result through Compress PDF next.
