Keeps text, links and bookmarks. Images are reduced to 150 dpi.
Before you start
- Balanced and Strong reduce image size and keep selectable text; a text-only PDF may change very little.
- Maximum reduces images to 72 ppi: for screens, not for printing. It keeps text, links and bookmarks.
- If the result is not smaller, we return the original.
- A compressed copy may invalidate the PDF’s digital signatures.
- Zoom in to check small text and image details before sending it.
- Keep the original if you need to verify a signature.
When email will not take it
Mail services limit attachment size. Gmail, for example, allows up to 25 MB per message, and the receiver's server can set a lower limit. A PDF with photos or scanned pages reaches that fast.
How to make it smaller
- Choose the PDF in the box above.
- Leave the Balanced level and press Compress PDF.
- Compare the size before and after.
- If you need more, try Strong. Maximum turns the pages into images and is the last resort.
Several documents at once
You can add several files and they are compressed one after another. At the end, download them one by one or all together in a ZIP. To send them as a single document, join them afterwards with Merge PDF.
Actually private
Compression happens in your browser. The PDF is not uploaded to any server, and that matters when what you are sending is a payslip, a contract or a medical report.

Common questions
Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No. PDFs are processed on your device. We do not receive or store your files or their names. The server receives normal requests to load the website. TotPDF keeps no access or error logs of its own. This version has no analytics, advertising or trackers. Tools like iLovePDF, Smallpdf or PDF24 send files to their servers and delete them after one or two hours. TotPDF processes them in your browser: they are never uploaded.
Is it free? Is there a daily limit?
Yes. There is no daily limit, per-document quota or paid plan. Run successive batches as needed. Safety limits are 150 MB per file, 500 pages for rendering and 25 million pixels per page. Available memory may impose lower limits.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in modern browsers. A computer often has more memory for large documents. Keep the tab open during processing and check the PDF before sending it.
